From Patients

"When I was first diagnosed with sleep apnea, I thought that my only option was CPAP therapy. I was so happy when my doctor told me that I could have a dental appliance instead. And I was even happier when I got my SUAD™ Device! With The SUAD™ Device not only was I able to sleep all night but so was my wife since she no longer had to put up with my once uncontrollable snoring. The SUAD™ Device is comfortable and stands up to its word."

Oral Appliance Therapy

A growing number of men and women have discovered these perfect solutions to end snoring and improving sleep quality. Very easy to use, Dental Appliances, or Oral Appliances are inserted into the mouth.

Dental Appliances are an effective, comfortable, and durable alternative to CPAP therapy or corrective surgery. Men and women can wear them during sleep to prevent the collapse of the tongue and soft tissues in the back of the throat so that the airway stays open during sleep.

The various oral appliances used by Dr. Streit for patients in the Seattle area are similar to a sports mouth guard or an orthodontic retainer. They are custom fit for each patient, and constructed of soft, comfortable acrylic. The appliance fits over the upper and lower teeth. Its function is to hold the lower jaw forward so the tongue and soft tissues of the throat do not collapse into the throat causing snoring and sleep apnea. The appliances promote adequate air intake and help to provide normal sleep in people who snore and have sleep apnea. The device is easy to place and remove, easy to clean, and is convenient for travel.

Oral appliances for sleep apnea and/or snoring are NOT available over-the-counter. Appliances are only available by prescription or construction by a licensed dentist or physician.

A medical evaluation and diagnosis is important to treating all illnesses, including sleep disordered breathing. Dentists are not licensed to diagnose Snoring or Obstructive Sleep Apnea, however Dr. Streit works closely with doctors that can diagnose sleep disorders.

Most medical insurance plans cover both the sleep studies for diagnosis and the Oral Appliances. Insurance benefits vary by company, plans, and deductibles, so please call our office at (425) 771-3266 and ask for Carmen or Ashley with any questions you may have.

For patients with mild sleep apnea, these devices are generally effective in providing relief in 75% of patients. For patients with moderate sleep apnea, these devices are 60% effective. And for patients with severe sleep apnea, there is a 40% effective rate. Dr. Streit works closely with sleep medicine physicians in his area who provide overall diagnosis and treatment plans. Dr. Streit offers a variety of oral appliances to meet your specific needs in a comfortable, caring environment. These devices are easily adjusted to find and maintain the best fit. Patients often experience immediate improvement in their sleep. Oral Appliance Therapy is easily tolerated, and is recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine as a first-line treatment choice for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Following are just some of the benefits:

  • Easily Adjusted: Oral Appliances are easily adjusted, making it comfortable and maintaining the best fit.
  • Immediate results: Most patients experience relief the very first night the device is worn.
  • Easy to tolerate: Nine in ten patients wear the device all night, every night—making oral appliances a highly effective solution for both snoring and sleep apnea.
  • Simple Solution: With oral appliance therapy, there is no need for surgery, CPAP or medication.
